High School grads, are you coming to Ocean City for some fun in the sun? Do you like to dance or play volleyball or basketball? Do you like to bowl or surf the water slide? Would you like to learn how to windsurf or kayak? How about playing laser tag or paintball? Play It Safe 2009 has just the thing for you!

Play It Safe can offer you all of these activities and so much more. During June, the Ocean City Play It Safe month, there are over 40 exciting free events planned. 2009 is the 18th Anniversary of this great project which is for High School graduates. With the support and administration of the Worcester County Health Department, it is planned and sponsored by the Ocean City Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Committee. The Play It Safe committee develops, prints and distributes nearly 65,000 Play It Safe booklets to high schools across Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Delaware just before graduation. If the booklets are not available at your school, you can pick one up at many Ocean City businesses, Visitor's Center on 40th St., Chamber of Commerce and places of accommodation. This booklet contains over 47 money saving coupons and a centerfold calendar listing of all the free events. In addition, the Play It Safe booklet contains valuable information about potential health hazards, local laws and ordinances and where to seek help if needed.

The goal of Play It Safe is to encourage high school graduates to make informed, healthy choices while having responsible fun without the use of alcohol and other drugs. This project is a well coordinated effort of the Ocean City Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Committee, the Worcester County Health Department and the Town of Ocean City. It is a community wide project that involves a partnership of health, education, law enforcement, business, service organizations and volunteers. With a core grant from the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention and donations from many local businesses and caring citizens, this project has been able to grow stronger every year.

Ocean City is a great place to visit, to have great fun and to make wonderful graduation memories. One important objective for the Play It Safe program is to promote an injury-free June for visiting High School grads. We encourage all high school grads who are planning to come to Ocean City for Senior Week to get a Play It Safe booklet from their high school or pick one up here in Ocean City. Check out the events, plan to attend them and be sure to bring your booklet with you! Pick up a wristband to ride the city bus all week - FREE. With everyone working together, your graduation vacation to Ocean City will be enjoyable and filled with outstanding memories. We, the Play It Safe committee, look forward to meeting you at one of our awesome graduation events!

A Welcome from the Mayor of Ocean City:

Congratulations Class of 2008 and Welcome to Ocean City!

You have passed a major milestone with your recent graduation from high school now it is time to relax and have some fun and where better to do that than right here in Ocean City, Maryland!

I remember very well the summer of 1967 when I, like you today, visited Ocean City with my friends and classmates to celebrate our graduation. It was a great time to be in Ocean City and although the town may look just a little bit different today it still features the same beach, boardwalk and sense of excitement that we enjoyed back in “The Day”.

Now it is your turn to experience that new found sense of freedom and all of the fun and excitement of Ocean City. It is a time to reminisce with your friends and to begin to talk about the future as you experience days on the beach and nights out on the boardwalk.

We encourage you to enjoy all of the great alcohol free events offered by the Play It Safe Program while you are here celebrating in Ocean City. This is your week to shine in the Ocean City Sun and we hope that is a safe experience that you will remember for a lifetime!

Sincerely,

Rick Meehan

Here Is What Just Some Of The Parents Are Saying About Play It Safe Ocean City...

"Thank you for your time and effort on behalf of the
youngsters attending Ocean City during senior
week...my son, Greg (Bel Air High School Class
of 2007), signed up for your program during his first
day in OC and had a great time.  The incentives that
encouraged proper and legal behavior had a great
impact on him and his friends.  They just
returned...safe and sound...

With high regards,

Robert
